Don't "bug out" when you see a bunch of tiny critters in your garden " they can be helpful.

With help from a few thousand little ladybugs, kids will learn about plants, insects and ecology when "Bug Out" kicks off at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Myriad Botanical Gardens and Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory, 301 W. Reno.

The event begins when kids release more than 75,000 ladybugs in the conservatory, said Jennifer Lindsey-McClintock, Myriad Botanical Gardens spokeswoman. By helping distribute the ladybugs, children and their parents will see how these bugs help the plants and eat the other pesky pests roaming around.

"This is one of our most popular events, and it is a great family-friendly event," Lindsey-McClintock said. "It is a good learning opportunity for children to understand the benefit that not all bugs are bad, and that some bugs are beneficial, and in this case, are beneficial to our plant life."

While the ladybugs benefit the plants in the conservatory, children and families will participate in crafts and games.

"Bug Out" is one of the last opportunities visitors will have to experience the Crystal Bridge before it closes for a year-long renovation project, which begins April 26.

Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 4 to 12. The Crystal Bridge is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 297-3995 or visit www.myriadgardens.com. "LeighAnne Manwarren
