If Saturday's event at Lake Overholser and Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge is a success, things will look like you were never there.

Volunteers are meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the Lake Overholser Pavilion, near N.W. 14th Street and E. Overholser, for a cleanup event and Earth Day celebration. They will break up into small groups to clean specific areas surrounding the lake and refuel with barbecue from Earl's Rib Palace and hamburgers from the Cimarron Steak House. During lunch, more than 60 items and prizes will be raffled.

The annual event was founded five years ago by Karen Miles. Because the refuge is not maintained by Oklahoma City Parks Department, trash is not routinely collected.

"It is incumbent on all to keep it clean for everyone. Every time I would take my dog for walk around Stinchcomb, I would take a bag with me, because I knew how much trash there would be along the way," Miles said. "(Stinchcomb) has such wonderful areas; a lot of people aren't even aware of some of these areas. It is a lot of fun for people to actually see what is out there and see that it is right in the city."

The event is open to the public, but volunteers should RSVP to Miles to ensure enough food has been ordered. Participants under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign a liability waver. Call 702-8192 or e-mail karen.miles@deq.ok.gov. "LeighAnne Manwarren
