>"But I firmly believe if I am not the nominee, it is a Republican governor," Askins said. "I believe that with all of my heart and soul. ... I do believe that as lieutenant governor, I could have done the same work that I am doing. I would not have that much difficulty, but I would not be in a position to be able to go to the governor like I can now. I'm the governor's partner. That option would not be available (with a Republican governor)."

With just a few days left, the two contenders will use everything they have to win out. Lovelady said it will come down to two things:

Riding along
For the two stories written about the governor's race, Oklahoma Gazette requested to ride in the same vehicle with the main candidates for one day during the campaign. Three of the candidates agreed: Mary Fallin, Randy Brogdon and Drew Edmondson. Lt. Gov. Jari Askins could not make the same agreement due to her security detail, which accompanies her every day.

Under Oklahoma statute Title 47, the lieutenant governor shall be provided a state vehicle and security officer from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The lieutenant governor has the use of the vehicle and security for all duties and functions, including campaign events, at no expense to the campaign.

By comparison, Askins' primary opponent, Edmondson, has spent tens of thousands of dollars on car rentals, insurance for the rentals, fuel and even $15 for jumper cables, records show.
