Enchanted garden creatures, including elves, fairies and animated bugs and flowers, will mingle and make-believe this weekend in the Paseo.

From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, the annual Fairy Ball is a dress-up and art event for kids that combines dancing with magical costume creation. Professional dancers will work their way through the crowd with original music.

Lorrie Keller, artistic director for Theatre Upon a StarDanceSwan who coordinates the dancers, said children look forward to the event all year long.

"The years we have held the ball have let us find out what is very successful and what children love," she said. "The simplicity is the best-kept secret."

The simple concept of costumes and dancing has translated into a creative process for the participating kids. Children are encouraged to create a basic costume at home and add their finishing touches at the ball under the watchful eye of Paseo artists and organizers.

"The Fairy Ball was created for children, so that children could have this wonderful chance to enjoy their own creativity ... their own creative story," Keller said. "And they do have their own story as they create their costumes, and when they arrive to the ball in their costume, they already feel like they are magic."

The ball is held on the corner of N. Dewey Avenue and N.W. 28th Street.
