By summertime, school is usually the furthest thing from children's minds. But this was not the case at the Firehouse Art Center, 444 S. Flood in Norman.

Over the summer, more than 250 students attended art classes, where they learned various media, including painting, drawing, papier-mché and clay. The classes were designed to supplement art education in the schools, said Douglas Shaw Elder, Firehouse's executive director.

"Kids are naturally inclined to be artists," he said. "They're curious, inventive and they have big imaginations."

As a result, the students created about 300 pieces of original artwork, ranging from sculptures to collages. Firehouse will display the works through Oct. 16 in its "Children's Summer Art Program 2010 Exhibition."

Classes will continue through the school year. Organized by age groups, kids will take weekly trips to the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, learn design elements and create their very own works of art.

"We are really trying to create a well-rounded program," Elder said. "And the kids take to it like they're hungry for art."

The gallery is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, call 329-4523 or visit www.normanfirehouse.com. "Ta'Chelle Jones
