Overholser-Centennial-7

Spread out a blanket and pick a spot on the lawn to read about Oklahoma animals at the historic Overholser Mansion with your kids this weekend.

"Storytime Under the Elms" starts at 9 a.m. Saturday. Children from pre-kindergarten to fourth grade are invited to listen to readings of children's books "Wild Buffalo Roam" and "Grady's in the Silo."

Built in 1903, the French chateau-style three-story house was once home to prominent Oklahoma City leader Henry Overholser in 1903. The house features elaborate canvas painted walls and ornate original furnishings, fixtures and stained glass.

"It's a fun, entertaining, relaxing way to spend at the Overholser Mansion that highlights Oklahoma's unique history," said Liz Carr, Overholser Mansion director. "You get to be outside on this beautiful lawn on a great summer day and learning about history, too."

ACTIVITIES
After reading, kids will be invited to make hand-puppet buffalos and cows to resemble the main characters from the stories.

The event continues through Aug. 11, with weekly themes including "Going West: Journey to Oklahoma," "O is for Overholser" and "Oklahoma's Turbulent Thirties."

The Overholser Mansion is located at 405 N.W. 15th and is open for guided tours 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, call 528-8485. "Lauren Hopkins
