Kids can take an adventure tailored specifically for them, all while learning about art and literature.

Art Adventures, an interactive program for ages 3-5, gives children the opportunity to learn creative forms of expression at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, 555 Elm in Norman. Each Tuesday, when museum admision is free, the program offers families with toddlers the chance for a little art education.

"The goal of the program is to get children and their caregivers comfortable with art, and eventually create museumgoers out of them," said Susan Baley, the museum's director of education.

Children learn different media, including oil pastels, painting, sun printing and sculpture. Each activity coincides with a book that features artistic elements. Last week featured "Red Sings from the Treetops: A Year in Color" and painting with vibrant hues.

"I think children have a very visceral, emotional response to color, and I am thrilled to have 'Red Sings' used to introduce children to the world of art," said the book's author, Joyce Sidman.

At Tuesday's event, kids and their parents will file into a classroom and, after having the book "Five Little Pumpkins" read to them, engage in an art project of their own that includes pumpkin collage constructions.
"Art Adventures is always a bright spot in my week," Baley said. "It's a really fun time."

The program is 10:30-11:30 a.m. For more information, call 325-3272 or visit www.ou.edu/fjjma. "Ta'Chelle Jones
