Prove or apologize

K.A. Straughn November 4th, 2010

In his Gazette letter appearing Sept. 29 ("Peacemaking efforts defended"), Peace House Director Nathaniel Batchelder erroneously claims that I "challenged (his) assertion that anti-Muslim and anti-Obama emotions are fomented on Fox Radio by Glenn Beck and others."

In his Gazette letter appearing Sept. 29 ("Peacemaking efforts defended"), Peace House Director Nathaniel Batchelder erroneously claims that I "challenged (his) assertion that anti-Muslim and anti-Obama emotions are fomented on Fox Radio by Glenn Beck and others." I actually challenged his claim that "Beck and other Fox personalities" make "slanderous assertions" that President Obama is "a Muslim ... born in Kenya." Period. In future, Batchelder should quote me rather than misrepresent what I write.

Batchelder should also heed Jesus' warning about not practicing what one preaches: "(I)n the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you."

On the Peace House website, Batchelder excoriates "Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and the rest, for constantly instilling fear and hatred among listeners with groundless charges, unsubstantiated rumors, and outright deceptions that are divisive and destructive to civil life and reasoned dialogue in America."

Yet when asked to document Beck claiming President Obama is a Kenyan-born Muslim, Batchelder responds, "(I)f the origin of the ridiculous beliefs that President Obama is a foreign-born socialist Muslim cannot be pinned on Beck specifically "¦."

So, while Beck fills 25 pages in "Arguing with Idiots" with citations substantiating his assertions, Batchelder has to admit his only example of Beck's purported "slanderous assertions" might not even be Beck's.

Batchelder needs to live up to the standard by which he judges others. If Batchelder truly wants to promote peace, justice, unity, civil life and reasoned dialogue, rather than, say, instill fear and hatred of Beck and Fox with groundless charges, unsubstantiated rumors and outright deceptions, he will either substantiate his charge against Beck or apologize for his injustice at misleading the public with his unsubstantiated smear.
