Tutoring programs for Oklahoma City children will benefit through this month's teaming up of a wireless provider and former University of Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer.

Through the end of August, Alltel Wireless will donate $100 to the Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation fund for each OKC resident who:
" switches to the provider,
" renews an existing contract or
" adds a line to a current contract.

"Those kids sometimes need tutors in public school, and it is a fund that (goes) to pay for tutoring for kids that request it and ask for it and need it," said Switzer, an Alltel spokesman.

DETAILS
The company will give a minimum of $25,000 to the fund, Switzer said, in addition to offering credits to participants. If 2,500 or more people participate, he ceremonially will change his name to "Barry Switcher" at an OKC Alltel location Aug. 28.

This month's initiative is win-win for everyone, according to Switzer, who emphasized the importance of providing students with tools to be successful.

"Most of my players through my years of coaching, I wasn't recruiting kids to come to Harvard or Stanford, I've got kids coming to school that most of them were just qualifiers (academically)," he said. "Most athletes were the middle of the road " they weren't scholars " and they, a lot of them needed help. "¦ You can provide the opportunity and provide the resources for that to be a possibility."
