Kanye West — Yeezus

Try as you might, but there’s no escaping Kanye West. Turn on the TV, radio, computer — hell, take a stroll downtown and you might see his mug projected on the side of a building. It’s an undeniable fact of life in 2013: Kanye West is bigger than Buddha, Krishna and The Beatles (today, anyway) and he’ll be the first to let you know about it.

John Moreland — In the Throes

With the soul of a poet and the look of a Sons of Anarchy extra, Tulsa’s John Moreland has been gifted the sort of gravely, booming voice that does Bruce Springsteen proud and a similar understanding of the universal human experience. It’s made for some fantastic records — both as a solo artist and with his dissolved Black Gold Band — and In the Throes is his best yet.

Jumpship Astronaut — Lights Burn Out

Oklahoma has never been the haven for electronic rock music that it is for country, folk and, as of late, psychedelic pop, but from the sound of Lights Burn Out, Oklahoma City upstart Jumpship Astronaut seems intent on changing that.

Various artists — Reaching Out

Like so many Oklahomans, the local music scene has responded with generosity and grace in the wake of last month’s tragedy in Moore. It's like if Devo produced an Arcade Fire album, bandleader Nikolas Thompson said. "Dance-y, but heavily orchestrated as well."

Every song that Kite Flying Robot touched in the last four years turned to "Solid Gold." The pop/rock/indie band, which splits time between Oklahoma City and Tulsa, will release the 10-song, element-titled album Friday at the Blue Note, 2408 N. Robinson. Local indie rockers The Hex will be reuniting for the show.

"Solid Gold," the product of songwriter and bandleader Nikolas Thompson's transition from a solo project in San Francisco five years ago to a full band in Oklahoma today, features a variety of sounds in the energetic sound. From Nintendo blips and beeps to "the full range of orchestral instruments," Kite Flying Robot didn't skimp on the production, which was done at Blackwatch Studios in Norman by Michael Trepagnier (Coldplay, Motion City Soundtrack).

"It's like if Devo produced an Arcade Fire album," Thompson said. "Dance-y, but heavily orchestrated as well."

Due to the drummer's departure for Los Angeles, this will be the last Kite Flying Robot show for a while. Once the group trains a new drummer, the Robot'll reboot.

But don't get too attached to the "Solid Gold" nuggets.

"During the recording and mixing process, I heard the album so much that I probably won't even listen to it," Thompson said. "I've pretty much written the follow-up album." "Stephen Carradini
