Music Made Me: Josh Hogsett

Few, if any, Oklahoma bands have seen a rise as meteoric as Tallows over the past year, yet its seemingly overnight ascension didn’t happen by chance. The Oklahoma City four-piece is well-versed in the ways of modern pop songwriting, drawing from both glitchy electronica and cathartic indie rock in equal measure. Last year, the band pulled off a rare musical feat with its debut album, Memory Marrow, which was steeped heavily in the breadth of recent history yet managed to sound like nothing else before it.

Planting the seed

Chelsey Cope’s new band, Elms, is as earthy and native to Oklahoma as the trees that are their namesake. The soulful folk four-piece’s debut EP, Parallel Lines, was recorded at Bell Labs Recording Studio in Norman and is on its way in September. But the band has already given us a tease, with its first single, “Burn,” going live on SoundCloud on July 14.

Tony Bennett featuring the Count Basie Big Band - A Swingin' Christmas

Leading fantastic swing arrangements, Tony Bennett's iconic voice commands the Count Basie Big Band for an album of jazzy Christmas classics perfect for the best kinds of holiday parties. The always confident Bennett swaggers through holiday standards like "I'll Be Home for Christmas," a throwback big-band track with blazing horns and meandering piano interludes.

"Winter Wonderland" is similarly appealing' a seasonal and stylish strut with perky brass and peppy drumming. Unexpected and delightful, "My Favorite Things" is fun and a perfect sentiment for the season, despite not being a classic Christmas cut.

Stripped down, Bennett's voice easily finds character with simple lounge pianos on album closer "O Christmas Tree" and on less frantic holiday songs like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," a subdued, smoky song that's beautiful and charming.

If "A Swingin' Christmas" isn't on your holiday music shopping list, may your snowman's carrot wilt and wither.
