The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It

None May 26th, 2010

Bryan Callen has the unfortunate distinction of starring in one of the best comedies of the decade ("The Hangover") ... and now, one of its worst, in "The 41-Year-Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It." There's not a single laugh to be found.

As the title suggests, it's a parody. But who parodies comedies? Action films, horror movies, sci-fi spectaculars "” sure! But a comedy to make fun of a comedy? The math just doesn't work. Director Craig Moss tries anyway, centering his sights on the raunch-with-heart oeuvre of Judd Apatow.

Callen is Andy, a middle-aged man who's likable enough, yet has never had sex. All his stoner friends needle him about it, as does Blaqguy (Marque Richardson II), a black guy with "Benjamin Button" disease. Why "Button" was shoehorned in as a target amid the Apatow titles makes no sense, but at least the film's rental audiences are likely to get the connection; I can see the later "There Will Be Blood" scene leaving them baffled.

His sexual prospects look brighter when he meets Kim (Noureen DeWulf), an amputee who's all hot to trot, until she immediately has to go to Hawaii for a new job, before they can ever have a first date. Then Andy meets Sarah (Mircea Monroe), who gets mega-drunk and, while blindfolded, offers it up. Unbeknownst to her, Blaqguy takes her up on it instead of Andy, so when she shows up pregnant the next day (yes, the next day) and Andy claims it's not his baby, one big misunderstanding snowballs. Ha-ha!

I mean, ha-ha?

That's a thin string on which to hang a feature film, so the running time is padded by gags "” emphasis on "gag" "” involving diving into the bowels of an outdoor toilet, and punching minorities
