A major disappointment in 2004's "Alien vs. Predator" was the climactic dust-up between the two title characters. It didn't have that old "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" cachet that comes with otherworldly monsters whaling the crap out of each other. This time around, directors Colin and Greg Strause bring on the main event after about 75 minutes of surprisingly effective buildup.
The Predator has arrived on Earth to destroy the Aliens that caused the crash of a Predator ship. The Aliens run around a small town in Colorado, pumping Alien eggs down the throats of any human unlucky enough to encounter them. Chests burst open like roses in the spring. Neither monster breed cares anything about human life " people are just collateral damage in this intergalactic smackdown. It's actually smarter than its predecessor " I guess it would have to be " and a lot more intense.
The cast is mostly second-tier TV actors, but they are convincing and attractive. Maybe it's just the lingering generosity of Christmas, but I enjoyed this one. R
