Escape from Tomorrow

With Escape from Tomorrow, one fears the story behind the movie would loom larger than the movie itself. Luckily, that is not the case. After all, it opens with a decapitation on Disney World’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster.

Sorcerer

William Friedkin spends a lot of time in his 2013 memoir discussing why Sorcerer didn't click with critics and audiences even though he believes it to be better than his previous film, The Exorcist. Now that Warner Home Video has reissued Sorcerer on Blu-ray, we can see what Friedkin's fuss is all about.

Broadchurch: The Complete First Season

Welcome to the coastal resort of Broadchurch, population … oh, who can keep track, what will all the corpses? Yes, Broadchurch is yet another British television procedural involving the search for a murderer in a quaint little town, just like the limited series The Fall and Top of the Lake.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

Essentially part five in the ridiculously profitable horror franchise, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones continues the found-footage conceit of the other films. Alien vs. Predator: Requiem

None January 3rd, 2008

Reviewer's grade: B

A major disappointment in 2004's "Alien vs. Predator" was the climactic dust-up between the two title characters. It didn't have that old "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" cachet that comes with otherworldly monsters whaling the crap out of each other. This time around, directors Colin and Greg Strause bring on the main event after about 75 minutes of surprisingly effective buildup.

The Predator has arrived on Earth to destroy the Aliens that caused the crash of a Predator ship. The Aliens run around a small town in Colorado, pumping Alien eggs down the throats of any human unlucky enough to encounter them. Chests burst open like roses in the spring. Neither monster breed cares anything about human life "” people are just collateral damage in this intergalactic smackdown. It's actually smarter than its predecessor "” I guess it would have to be "” and a lot more intense.

The cast is mostly second-tier TV actors, but they are convincing and attractive. Maybe it's just the lingering generosity of Christmas, but I enjoyed this one. R
