With Escape from Tomorrow, one fears the story behind the movie would loom larger than the movie itself. Luckily, that is not the case. After all, it opens with a decapitation on Disney World’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster.

William Friedkin spends a lot of time in his 2013 memoir discussing why Sorcerer didn't click with critics and audiences even though he believes it to be better than his previous film, The Exorcist. John Cusack is Mike Enslin, a jaded author of books on haunted tourism. He visits hotels and sites around the country that boast about ghosts, spirits and apparitions. He never has seen any of the ghosts himself, but after he gets a postcard inviting him to stay at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City, that all changes.


Enslin has a past "” a wife he ditched after their daughter died, which all comes back to bear on the self-centered writer. He just doesn't believe "” not in ghosts, not in family or God or life ... but room 1408 helps him sort out his history by scaring the bejesus out of him.


Based on a short story by Stephen King, the script is nothing new, but talented Cusack and direction by Swede Mikael H
