No Holds Barred

RLJ Entertainment's new Blu-ray for No Holds Barred begins with what seems like dozens of trailers for movies starring pro wrestlers from the WWE talent pool. Each flick went direct to home video, but once upon a time — aka 1989 — one had to go to the multiplex to catch such a spectacle.

including Kate Beckinsale ("Pearl Harbor"), Michael Angarano ("The Forbidden Kingdom"), Amy Sedaris (TV's"Strangers With Candy"), Nicky Katt ("Sin City") and Olivia Thirlby ("Juno "). Rockwell plays Glenn, a recovering loser who's separated from wife Annie (Beckindale) who kept custody of their 4-year-old daughter.

Annie works with Arthur (Angarano), who she babysat in a bygone era, and Barb (Sedaris), who is married to Nate (Katt), with whom Annie has a "special" relationship. In the meantime Arthur's establishing a high-school romance with Lila (Thirlby), the geeky-but-cute new girl in class. As complicated and precarious as the balance between all these characters is initially, it gets worse.

An adaptation of a novel by acclaimed author (and pal of Stephen King) Stewart O'Nan, "Snow Angels" is one of the most depressing character-driven dramas in recent memory. It's depressing, but it only manages to be so through strong character-appeal and storytelling, making it worth the emotional maiming. R
