The International Downtown Association awarded Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. a Special Achievement Award in Public Spaces Sept. 17 at their annual conference in New York City.
Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. received the award for the Downtown tunnel system, The Underground, at the IDA 53rd Annual Conference & World Congress.
IDA also recognized former Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick as an Individual Leadership Award recipient for his work with the Metropolitan Area Projects initiative.
"These awards reflect the continued momentum of progress in downtown Oklahoma City by recognizing both the visionary who began the renaissance as well as the latest cutting edge project which demonstrates the vibrancy being created in downtown Oklahoma City," said Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. President Brett Hamm in a statement.
A system of tunnels and bridges connecting more than 30 buildings in the core of Downtown Oklahoma City, The Underground reopened after a one-year $1.6 million renovation in March. The first tunnel was constructed in 1931 with the majority of the Conncourse " named for civic leader Jack T. Conn -- being built between 1972 and 1984. - Gazette staff
