Night Wolf / Hidden

This is horror?

Horror

Rod Lott
From the looks of a most unfortunate, unplanned double feature I recently experienced with Night Wolf and Hidden, the genre of horror has been reduced to 90 minutes of young people crawling around in abandoned structures.

Kill

Or be killed. Or don’t bother.

Horror

Rod Lott
Five strangers awake in a room, not knowing how they got there. Cube, anyone?

Splintered

The title perfectly describes my attention span with this would-be shocker.

Horror

Rod Lott
Splintered is the third movie I've seen this month opening with a group of young people getting lost while driving through the wild, and they’re so far gone, the GPS is useless.

Creature

The low-grossing horror film provides plenty of gross highlights for fans.

Horror

Rod Lott
Creature has attracted a fair amount of attention of late, but for all the wrong reasons, as it reportedly earned the lowest first-weekend gross of any wide-release theatrical film in history. The horror movie’s crime isn't incompetence (à la Birdemic), but underexposure to the point of nonexposure.

The Burning Moon

Phase out this lunatic ‘Moon.’

Horror

Rod Lott
Judging by the hype surrounding the DVD release of “The Burning Moon,” one would think Intervision has done cult-film enthusiasts a solid by preserving this 1997 obscurity for all mankind.

Baba Yaga

Any ‘witch’ way you can, horror fans.

Horror

Rod Lott
As the unique titles have it, "from the strip cartoon" comes “Baba Yaga,” a minor slice of Italian Pop Art horror from 1973. Despite that date, it carries that unmistakable striking look of the psychedelic '60s.

The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence)

You’re not prepared for this.

Horror

Rod Lott
Anyone who can recall our 2010 review of “The Human Centipede (First Sequence)” may remember an observation that the film’s events weren’t as graphic as everyone expected — that they could’ve been much worse.

The Dead

If you thought TV's 'The Walking Dead' was slow ...

Horror

Rod Lott
Recently, I bought an issue of a UK film magazine whose cover story counted down the 66 best zombie movies ever made. Perched at No. 31 was Howard and Jonathan Ford's "The Dead" — a damned strong showing for two Brit brothers whose previous pair of pictures didn’t even make a blip.

The Devil's Rock

Thud.

Horror

Rod Lott
On the eve of D-Day, British soldiers Capt. Grogan (Craig Hall, "30 Days of Night") and Sgt. Tane (Karlos Drinkwater, TV's "Spartacus") successfully maneuver through mines to infiltrate a cavernous Forau Island fortress that could be on the cover of Architectural Digest, if only the magazine printed an issue devoted to the homes of satanic creatures.

Spiderhole

‘Spider,’ man!

Horror

Rod Lott
In the movies, nothing good ever comes of a group of college students leaving their confines for a weekend. Noth-ing.

Night Train Murders

For effective Italian chills, choo-choo-choose this!

Horror

Rod Lott
Blue Underground's cover of the Blu-ray debut of 1975's "Night Train Murders" bears the blurb, "More reprehensible than 'Last House on the Left'!"

Cold Sweat

Wanna see a terrific twisted thriller from Argentina? BAM!

Horror

Rod Lott
When Román (Facundo Espinosa, "The Motorcycle Diaries") tracks down his girlfriend to the apartment building of the guy she's been seeing behind his back, he isn't quite prepared for what he finds: two old guys menacing several young women with nitroglycerin, acid and other ridiculously volatile chemicals left over from a real-life 1975 uprising in Argentina.

Shark Night

Compared to 'Jaws,' it's all gums, but that's OK.

Horror

Rod Lott

With a title like "Shark Night," you know exactly what you're going to get: a dumb thriller about sharks eating people.

Gurozuka

You've got 'Ring' around the collar!

Horror

Rod Lott
Stop me if you've heard this one before: Japanese students stumble upon a mysterious tape featuring a girl with long, black, stringy hair who soon appears in real life to kill.

Final Destination 5

Plenty of blood and nearly no brains. But as long as you know that …

Horror

Rod Lott
Last year, the fourth “Final Destination” movie swapped a numeral for a definitive article, because producers figured the franchise had run its course.
