Wrong again

Letters to the Editor

David Grow
Rev. Steve Kern’s letter to the editor ("What evolutionists fear,” March 13, Oklahoma Gazette) projects, yet again, his willful ignorance of science. His characterizations of evolutionary science are flat wrong

Reaping what you gamble

Letters to the Editor

Mike Brake
Losing bet” (News, C.G. Niebank, March 13, Oklahoma Gazette), which laments the presence of 100,000 gambling addicts in Oklahoma and the lack of taxpayer dollars to treat them, is a perfect example of an old conservative truth: Boneheaded actions by government often have costly unintended consequences.

Right-thinking governors

Letters to the Editor

Jo Davis
Ohio’s Republican governor, John Kasich, recently surprised most political pundits by changing his mind about expanding Medicaid. “I, as all of you know, am not a supporter of Obamacare,” Kasich explained at a press conference. “But I think this makes great sense for the state of Ohio.”

What evolutionists fear

Letters to the Editor

Steve Kern
Regarding the Feb. 6 letter to the editor by Douglas Mock, Joseph Thai and Tom Boyd (“Same ol’, same ol’”): It’s the same ol’, same ol’ strategy by closed-minded, evolution-Kool-Aid-drinking scientists in our universities who keep out an ever-watchful eye to protect their weak theory from any scrutiny.

Balanced journalism

Letters to the Editor

Lawrence Curtis
Congratulations for publishing Dr. Dana Stone’s timely and splendidly written “The truth of emergency contraception” (Commentary, Feb. 20, Oklahoma Gazette). Her rationale was validly bolstered by well-supported and cited facts. Her commentary was an effective, appropriate and much-needed contribution to a volatile and poorly understood subject — more accurately, a widely misunderstood and high-profile controversy of the day.

Water and wishful thinking

Letters to the Editor

Ron Ferrell
I want to thank Oklahoma Gazette for featuring three important stories, in back-to-back issues, about our looming water crisis. Western Oklahoma hasn’t had measurable rain in about three years. Farm ponds are dry. Foss Lake is in crisis. Clinton is in dire water straits, and the list grows.

Pot and panned

Letters to the Editor

Paul Walker
Mike Brake is too old to be writing about medicinal cannabinol use (Commentary, "Be cautious with a dopey idea," Feb. 13, Oklahoma Gazette).

Embracing early childhood education

Letters to the Editor

John Thompson
President Obama did not explicitly renounce his risky, first-term, test-driven policies that have caused so much harm to poor children of color in Oklahoma City and other districts, but he did the next best thing. His new priority is a researched-based call for high-quality early education.

Consistent religious beliefs

Letters to the Editor

Nancy Roche
Isn’t it ironic that Hobby Lobby is using religious beliefs as an excuse to not participate in the health care mandate, but it doesn’t hesitate to import all that garbage they sell us from China, where women are still strongly encouraged to have abortions?

Fair price

Letters to the Editor

Anthony Francisco
I read with interest your account of the withdrawal by the city of Oklahoma City of an application to rezone major areas of the JFK neighborhood (News, “Zoning out,” Jerry Bohnen, Feb. 13, Oklahoma Gazette) to a Planned Unit Development (PUD) for the expansion of the Oklahoma Health Center (OHC), speaking collectively of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Presbyterian Health Complex, the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority and related entities.

Show some respect

Letters to the Editor

Lance Von Moulder
After the death of Basile Kolliopoulos, I was pleased to hear Steve Hill was going to do a tribute (Commentary, “In memory of a rebel with a cause,” Feb. 6, Oklahoma Gazette), but I was very disappointed to see the cover.

New thinking needed

Letters to the Editor

Terri L. Miller-Simms
Reluctantly, I listened to the majority of Gov. Mary Fallin’s opening State of the State address to both houses of the Oklahoma Legislature. It was not easy, but I tried very hard to hear something to “hang my hat on” — nada, zip.

What about the public good?

Letters to the Editor

Nathaniel Batchelder
How did America become a nation with 440 billionaires politically concerned mostly with tax cuts allowing them to keep or increase their wealth? What happened to valuing the public good and social responsibility, the principle that all of us, especially the fortunate, should contribute to a society supporting everyone’s possibilities for education, opportunity, access to some kind of health care, a better life for themselves and their families?

A tax cut to die for

Letters to the Editor

D.W. Tiffee
Gov. Mary Fallin’s $106 million-a-year tax cut proposal effectively precludes Oklahoma from spending a net $50 million annually to insure 200,000 Oklahomans under Obamacare, a coldblooded death sentence for thousands who will suffer and die from treatable medical conditions. The pro-life crowd’s road to prosperity is paved with human bones.

Not amused

Letters to the Editor

Rosemary Brown
No doubt the Oklahoma Gazette staff member who wrote the Life article about Walt Strony in the Jan. 23 edition is still snickering at his own wit. While cheap shots and vulgarity are staples in your paper’s so-called humor content, it’s appalling that you used them to open a straight news article about an upcoming concert by an accomplished musician.
