Dick Tracy

If you thought the movie looked good before, you don't know ‘Dick.’

Family

Rod Lott
Unlike Madonna, Dick Tracy has aged quite well. Although considered somewhat of a disappointment upon its summer of 1990 release, unfairly attached with Batman-level expectations, Warren Beatty's film actually is quite successful in achieving its goals, which is even more apparent now that it's made a long-overdue Blu-ray debut from Walt Disney Studios.

ParaNorman

The walking dead get animated in a freaky, funny family film.

Family

Phil Bacharach
If you haven’t seen 2009’s Coraline, you might be more inclined to surrender yourself to the macabre charm of ParaNorman. Both films, works of stop-motion animation by the Oregon-based Laika company, share much in common: an outcast protagonist, ineffectual grown-ups, visually stunning riffs on the supernatural.

Thunderstruck

OKC Thunder star Kevin Durant’s movie debut hurts as much as an NBA Playoffs loss to the Miami Heat.

Family

Harrison Lott
Editor’s note: For Thunderstruck, the new-to-home-video family comedy starring the Thunder’s Kevin Durant, it struck us that, since the movie is really aimed at pre-teen and teenaged KD fans, who better to review it than an avowed Thunder fan of that age? Here with his review is guest critic Harrison Lott, a 15-year-old student at Edmond Memorial High School.

Mad Monster Party?

We'll just drop by.

Family

Rod Lott
Before Hotel Transylvania, there was Mad Monster Party? (question mark theirs), a 1967 quasi-classic of stop-motion animation from Rankin/Bass — the company behind all those old Christmas specials that still air every year, from Rudolph to Frosty. What keeps this Party from being as perennial is that it's three times as long.

Miss Minoes

Purr-fect family entertainment.

Family

Rod Lott
One of the most enjoyable family films of the moment is actually 11 years old: Miss Minoes, a Dutch fantasy based on a children's book. I haven't read it, but from the looks of it, I'm betting the movie retains much of its whimsy.

Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion

Cute movie, and that’s no ‘Lion.’

Family

Rod Lott
I’m too young to have caught “Daktari” in its three-year run on TV in the late 1960s, but I knew of its existence. What I didn’t know is was based on a movie, the 1965 obscurity “Clarence, the Cross-Eyed Lion,” now available from Warner Archive.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

Not as strong as the first, but amiable enough

Family

Rod Lott
Last spring’s “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” caught me by surprise. Not only was it not painful, but it was genuinely funny — arguably the best family film of the past decade.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

It’s the penultimate ‘Potter’

Family

Rob Collins
The “Harry Potter” franchise is humming along after a decade of filming.

Yogi Bear

It's as bad you may have heard.

Family

Rod Lott
While watching "Yogi Bear" with my youngest child, our dog ran straight into a glass door. It was the only time in 80 minutes that I laughed.

Invitation to the Dance

The most rare of cinematic sub-genres: the dance anthology

Family

Rod Lott
If all you've seen of Gene Kelly is "Xanadu" and that one "Singin' in the Rain" clip that makes every other Oscar montage, right that wrong.

Megamind

More 'meh' than mega

Family

Phil Bacharach
I don’t presume to know whether the executives at DreamWorks Animation drive hybrids or turn off the lights when they leave a room, but in at least one respect, they appear to be environmentalists: They recycle their own films.

The Dukes: The Complete Series

Family

Rod Lott
As someone who was not particularly a fan of "The Dukes of Hazzard" growing up, I had forgotten the ridiculously popular CBS TV series had spun off into its own Saturday morning cartoon, titled simply "The Dukes."
