Wannabe pirates big and small (and short and tall) can escape the doldrums Sept. 19 at Southern Oaks Library's pirate event. The party ship sets sail from 2:30 to 5 p.m. with games, crafts, costume contests and even a swashbuckling scavenger hunt.
I bet there'll even be some eye patches involved.
OK, true story: I was a teacher's assistant for my favorite English teacher my senior year of high school. One day, her eye was irritated, so she asked me to go track her down an eye patch. Naturally, my fellow TA and I left school, drove to a store and bought her a pirate-style patch, because what other type is there, right? Turns out, she meant something a bit more medical.
Mrs. Porter's day as a reluctant pirate is the closest I've ever come to the scourge of the high seas. Unless, of course, you count me watching "Muppet Treasure Island."
