Just because something’s been loved before doesn’t mean it can’t be loved again. Look at me with all this sage advice. It’s like Dear Abby over here at ShopGirl headquarters.

Somehow, it’s already back-to-school time for kids. (That’s otherwise known as continue-to-work time for us sad, vacation-less adults.)

I was determined to find gold jewelry when I was in Florence. (Yes, still bringing up Italy. I promise to stop. Besides, I’m already itching to plan a trip to India and/or South Africa, so you have that to look forward to.)

Beat that heat

You know it’s bad when the national weather people are using your state to illustrate just how hot it is out there.

Features

So maybe it was not my best idea to spend a July weekend in western Oklahoma, a place known for sand dunes (hot), salt flats (also hot) and rattlesnakes (hot and deadly).

Guess what comes out in two days? I’ll give you a hint: It’s on the cover; I’ve blogged/talked/wrote about it kind of incessantly; I may or may not be wearing a T-shirt dedicated to it right now.

Salad supreme

Long live lettuce! During the long, hot days of summer, salad satisfies.

Food and Drink Features

Jenny Coon Peterson
Summer means salad. It’s light and easy — a perfect contrast to unbearably hot summer afternoons.

Up top

Is there a better time of the year to play around with the accessories up top?

Features

Sunglasses, headbands, hats — summer is about getting the hair off your face and the sun out of your eyes without looking like a “Mad Max” extra who’s wandered the Australian outback for 20-odd years.

Cafe central

Cafe Kacao is doing Central American food right with colorful cuisine and Latin flavor. Plus, you can’t beat an all-day breakfast.

Restaurant Reviews

Jenny Coon Peterson

I have a hard time saying Cafe Kacao without accenting the end like a loud, exuberant toucan. (ka-KOW!) But it somehow seems appropriate for this restaurant, which focuses on the savory, spicy flavors of Guatemala and southern Mexico.

Staying in

Not one for the heat? Enjoy some indoor shopping this Fourth of July weekend.

Jenny Coon Peterson
The Fourth of July long weekend is upon us. There’s always a ton to do: The OKC Phil’s “Red, White & Boom” is at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, or Edmond’s LibertyFest parade steps off at 9 a.m. the next morning.

Heading out

Go on vacation! But pack right first.

Features

Jenny Coon Peterson
Summer means vacation. Or, at least it should. I was fuming a few weeks ago over a CNN report lamenting the loss of American vacation.
