OKG7 Eat: Best of SW 29th Street

OKG7 Dining

Louis Fowler

Situated in the heart of Oklahoma City’s vibrant — and, sadly, often ignored — Latino community, SW 29th Street is a mecca for diners looking for the most authentic Mexican, Central- and South-American eats. Filled with carnicerias, panaderias and taco trucks, it can be daunting to choose just one. Here is OKG7’s beginner’s guide to the multicultural variety of this historic strip.

Willis — The Understanding

Hip Hop/Rap

Louis Fowler
From the opening R&B samples and powerful horn section that triumphantly blasts the arrival of a new hero on the scene, Willis’ The Understanding perfectly captures the innercity swagger of a blaxploitation movie icon.

OKG7 Tasty meals under $10

OKG7 Dining

Louis Fowler
Having wasted hundreds (thousands?) of dollars on junk that’ll be replaced by the latest upgrades in a year, forced resolutions to “not eat out as much” have become something of a mantra for the budget-conscious in 2014. However, a completely filling dinner doesn’t have to empty your wallet. In fact, you can get any of these delicious dishes for one measly Alexander Hamilton.

Honeylark — Heavy

Folk

Louis Fowler
The Oklahoma City music scene has been abuzz about Honeylark the past couple of weeks. Once you listen to their latest release, Heavy, you realize the hype is deadly justifiable.

Apocalyptic — Wisdom Mixtape Vol. 1

Hip Hop/Rap

Louis Fowler
In 2012, Robbie “Apocalyptic” Carpenter, former member of the legendary OKC rap collective Exodus, released the 20-track underground masterpiece Literary, a collection of sanctified hip-hop that was as rapid-fire with the rhymes as much as he is on fire for his Lord and Savior.

Jerome-coming

Hip-hopper Gregory Jerome might not be a household name, but he's determined to change that in 2014.

Music

Louis Fowler
Gregory Jerome is quick to clarify that he’s not a typical rapper — instead a positive, thought-provoking hip-hop artist. He also feels that may be why, since returning to Oklahoma City five years ago after a stint in Nashville, his music has been ignored by the mainstream.

Soul Williams — Love, Soul: The Musical Letters Collective, Part 1

Hip Hop/Rap

Louis Fowler
It’s easy to see why many secular types consider Christian music a joke. Badly produced, pre-programmed Casio backbeats and plastic saxophones providing the soundtrack to a holier-than-thou message inspires snickers and winces from even those least jaded. OKC’s Soul Williams aims to and succeeds in knocking some sense into that rightfully stereotyped scene.

Kill Your Darlings

Surge, Ginsberg!

Drama

Louis Fowler
To paraphrase Allan Ginsberg, I saw the best biopics of my generation destroyed by a need to include as much as possible in them, stuffing hysterically.
