Hold elected officials accountable

According to the website for the United States Senate, “Upon taking office, senators-elect must swear or affirm that they will ‘support and defend the Constitution.’” Our elected officials are not only voted upon by people within our state to represent Oklahoma but are also expected to protect and defend rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.

Mandating the Pledge of Allegiance

On Feb. 17, two bills that would require the daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools in our state cleared the Oklahoma Senate Education Committee. Senate Bills 1143 and 1500 change this from a provision of authorization to one of requirement; however, students may refrain if they desire.

Counterterrorism caucus spreads prejudice

In February 2013, Oklahoma State Rep. John Bennett (R) announced the formation of the Oklahoma Legislative Caucus on Counterterrorism. The stated goal of this caucus is to help protect Oklahomans from the potential threat of terrorism.

On Aug. 15, I received an unexpected phone call that delivered some of the best news I have heard in my lifetime. It was a call from Gadeir Abbas, one of the attorneys representing myself and other plaintiffs in a case known as the Oklahoma Anti-Sharia Amendment case.
