"Oklahoma City: Film Row"

3 p.m., Saturday August 27
A local expert on Oklahoma City’s once-thriving film exchange district will sign copies of his pictorial history, “Oklahoma City: Film Row,” at 3 pm Saturday, Aug. 27, at Full Circle Bookstore. Author Bradley Wynn’s book resurrects the city’s former life as a top film exchange venue for studios such as Paramount Pictures, MGM, Universal, Fox and Warner Brothers in never-before-seen photos.
Wynn used investigative techniques honed as a former state police officer to uncover the history of Film Row. Inspired to begin the project after seeing images from former workers of the district, he discovered photos in shoeboxes, backrooms and the Oklahoma Historical Society’s archive. He has captured more than 2,000 of his own digital photographs of the area’s development since 2003 and compiled a historic timeline and business directory of the city’s hundreds of former film exchanges.
Situated in a three-square-block area in downtown Oklahoma City, Film Row was a sales hub of films, posters and concessions for Midwestern U.S. theaters from 1907 until the 1980s. Nearly lost after years of neglect, the area recently has seen revitalization through the preservation efforts of advocates such as Wynn. Today the area is considered the fastest-growing district in city history.
“Oklahoma City: Film Row” is part of the Images of America series, which celebrates the history of U.S. neighborhoods, cities and towns through archival photos and distinctive stories from the past. The Oklahoman reporter and downtown Oklahoma City historian Steve Lackmeyer wrote the book’s forward.
Wynn is a founder of the Oklahoma Film Society and editor of the monthly newsletter “The Row.” He owns the Oklahoma-made leather goods business Scriptfolio.
