Student-Led Art Exhibition Promises Something Unique

NORMAN, OKLA. (January 17, 2013) — The first School of Art & Art History student-led art exhibition of 2013 promises something unique. Processing Translation, a New Media Collective Exhibition, is an ongoing exhibition, which opens on Monday, Jan. 28 at the School of Art & Art History’s Lightwell Gallery. A closing reception will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7 from 6-8 p.m. The exhibition may also be viewed online at www.ouarts.com/nmc.

Processing Translation is the second New Media Collective exhibition of the 2012-2013 school year. In October, the organization planned and installed a successful show featuring more than 30 artists and 40+ works of art ranging from photography, film and video to performance art and installation.

“This exhibition is an inversion of the traditional gallery show,” said Molly Youngblood, president of the New Media Collective. “ Beginning Monday, Jan. 28, the show will be in a progressive installation state. Each day, three participating artists will have 24 hours to respond to the developing gallery space and produce a new work of art.”

A live, streaming video feed of the artists at work will be available 24/7, beginning on Monday, Jan. 28 at 9:30 a.m. and will continue throughout the duration of the exhibition at www.ouarts.com/nmc. A live chat feature will also be available online for the audience to communicate with each working artist. Live chat requires Twitter, Facebook, or USTREAM login while the live-stream is available to all visitors to the site. The audience should use discretion when viewing or interacting with each artist.

Youngblood said, “The exhibition is highly performative and interactive, with all artists subjecting themselves to be viewed and influenced by an audience throughout their creative process. The process for each artist and resulting outcome are entirely unpredictable. Anything is possible.”

Each consecutive piece produced must be inspired by a work previously produced within the space, which gives the artists a chance to respond to one another, creating a truly unique exhibition.

The exhibition’s closing reception on Thursday, Feb. 7 will be the only time all the works will be on view at once.

The Lightwell Gallery is located on the second floor of the School of Art & Art History at 520 Parrington Oval in the OU Arts District. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and closed on weekends and OU holidays. The University of Oklahoma is an equal opportunity institution.
