American Chemical Society

6:30 p.m., Thursday February 07

The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Chemistry will host the Oklahoma Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting featuring guest speaker Donna J. Nelson, Ph.D., at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in Nigh University Center, Room 421.

Nelson’s presentation will focus on her work as a scientific advisor to the popular AMC network television show “Breaking Bad,” which follows the story of a high school teacher with advanced lung cancer who starts producing and selling methamphetamine to secure his family’s financial future.

Nelson, a professor of chemistry at the University of Oklahoma, received her Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Texas in Austin and completed post-doctoral work at Purdue University. She is credited with more than 100 publications, and has received many honors, including being named a fellow of the ACS and the 2012 Oklahoma Chemist of the Year. Along with conducting research and teaching, Nelson works with television shows to further the universal goal of presenting accurate science to audiences.

The ACS meeting is open to the public and will include a dinner served at 6:30 p.m. followed by Nelson’s presentation at 7:30 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $18 for members and guests and $5 for students.
