Run 2 Stop Distracted Driving
8 a.m., Saturday March 09
The second annual Run 2 Stop Distracted Driving at Oklahoma City University next month will raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and raise funds for the cause.
The 5K run and a 1-mile fun run begins at 8 a.m. March 9 at Oklahoma City University, in front of the Freede Wellness Center, at N.W. 27th St. and Florida Ave.
Student organizations from Oklahoma City University will sponsor family-friendly activities at the event. Last year, more than 120 runners participated.
The Run 2 Stop Distracted Driving is co-chaired by OCU administrative assistant Karen Vann and Director of University Counseling Brandi Gibson. Gibson’s stepdaughter, Emily, was killed in a distracted driving accident in 2009. Vann initiated the run at OCU last year after learning about Oprah Winfrey’s No Phone Zone campaign.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to FocusDriven, a non-profit organization that fights driver cell phone use. According to National Safety Council statistics, 28 percent of traffic accidents occur when drivers are talking on their cellphones or sending text messages.
Registration costs start at $5 for the fun run and go up to $25 for the 5K run with a T-shirt. Discounts apply for OCU students. For more information, email kvann@okcu.edu<mailto:kvann@okcu.edu > or bgibson@okcu.edu<mailto:bgibson@okcu.edu >, or call Vann at (405) 208-5252.
