Oklahoma City Police Department exhibit opens May 13 in City Hall

Visitors to City Hall will be able to learn about the 123-year history of the Oklahoma City Police Department during the second installment of “Oklahoma City! Sooner or Later…”

The exhibit opens at 10 a.m., on May 13 on the second floor of City Hall, 200 N Walker with an opening reception that is free and open to the public.

Police Chief William Citty will provide a history of the Police Department at the opening.

The history of the Police Department from 1890 to the present will be presented through photos, documents, historical items and text.

Examples of items on display are a bomb suit and robot used by the Department in the late 1980s, police uniforms, an armored vest from the 1930s, items issued to the first female officers in 1973 and a saddle used by the Mounted Patrol division.

“This continues the success of the first installment of “Oklahoma City! Sooner or Later…” that highlighted City government and the Fire Department,” City Clerk Frances Kersey said. “We are excited at the opportunity to tell the story of the Police Department and all the City employees that have contributed to the safety of our citizens.”

The self-guided exhibit is free and open to the public year-round from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on the second floor of City Hall, 200 N Walker.  For more information, contact the City Clerk’s Office at 297-2391.

The Sooner or Later exhibit is made possible by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council and the We the People initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The City of Oklahoma City matched the grant funds and partnered with the Metropolitan Library System, Oklahoma Historical Society, Oklahoma Publishing Company, Oklahoma City Museum of Art and Retro Metro OKC.
