On the Rise II
In Your Eye Gallery, in the Historic Paseo Arts District, is pleased to present “On the Rise II,” featuring new abstract Oklahoma landscape collage paintings by Michelle Junkin. The opening reception is Friday, June 7, from 6:00-10:00pm. The show runs through Sunday, June 30.
Inspired by the wide diversity of people and places found in Oklahoma, as well as its rich, tattered history, Michelle Junkin hand-assembles layer upon layer of words from discarded magazines. She alternates between building up and then tearing down these countless layers. In building, Junkin painstakingly cuts out and adheres hundreds and thousands of words to the surface. Her deconstruction process involves scraping with steel blades, dissolving, even destroying areas to create these seemingly worn compositions. Along the way, acrylic paint evocative of the colors of Oklahoma may be deliberately or daringly added or subtracted. Junkin’s process itself underscores the unpredictable nature of life. When amassed together, these tiny word-scraps, altered and encased by color, form a sense of Oklahoma, a warm but weathered view looking both back and forward.
Junkin’s abstracted landscapes are composed with strong horizontal shapes, distilling Oklahoma down to its most essential forms. The artist explains, “My art is forged by deep gratitude for life's journey. It strives to capture the joy found in average moments: a sunset’s color combination, a pattern of brickwork, or the red Oklahoma dirt.
“On the Rise II” opens Friday, June 7, and is on display through Sunday, June 30.
