Seussical The Musical – TYA Edition

None
2 p.m., Sunday June 30

The Sooner Theatre will present Seussical The Musical – TYA Edition, the first of two summer productions starring students in the theatre’s summer production camps, June 26-30, 2013.

The cast of 63 includes students entering grades 3-7, all of which auditioned for and were selected to perform in the camp. There are eight performances June 26-30, and the kids will rehearse in camp four hours per day each weekday to put up the show in just three and a half short weeks. Cast members are primarily from the south metro, including Oklahoma City, Mooreand Norman.

SEUSSICAL is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (LUCKY STIFFMY FAVORITE YEARONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and RAGTIME) have lovingly brought to life favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination--Jojo. Oh, the Thinks You Will Think as the spirit of imagination transports the colorful characters from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible  world of the Whos.

The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La  Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that  makes you laugh and cry.

“This production is probably the most vocally challenging show we will do with this age cast. It is a primarily song and dance show with a little dialogue in a few places, so the pacing is fast and these campers are being troupers about tackling the advanced material,” said Jennifer Baker, Sooner Theatre Executive Director. “And, because it is the familiar and quirky works of Dr. Seuss, they are having a blast and so will our audiences!”

Show times and dates are:
Wednesday, June 26, 7:30 p.m.

Thursday – Saturday, June 27-29, 2 and 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, June 30, 2 p.m.

Some principle roles are double cast.

“Many times, youth productions are very limited on what they do technically in shows, but these performers work with professional set and lighting designers, sound engineers and costumers, so they get to experience a very professional production,” said Baker.

Tickets are $10 per person and will go on sale to the public beginning Saturday, June 8. Group rates are available for 10 or more tickets to any one performance. Tickets can be purchased online at www.soonertheatre.com any time day or night, or by phone at (405) 321-9600 or at the Sooner Theatre box office, Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – noon and 2-5 p.m.

Seussical TYA is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

The Studio of The Sooner Theatre's programming is made possible in part by the support of the Oklahoma Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Norman Arts Council, the City of Norman and Republic Bank & Trust.
