Not Your Grandmother’s Art Show

None
Thursday July 11

In Your Eye Gallery, in the Historic Paseo Arts District, is pleased to present “Not Your Grandmother’s Art Show,” the artistic explorations of Natalie Friedman and Andrea Kissinger. Both artists exhibit their passion for taking traditional arts and stretching them beyond their original boundaries. The opening reception is Friday, July 5, from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. The show runs through Sunday, July 27.

Friedman takes traditional textile artistry approaches, such as quilting, embroidery, and beading, to new heights in her fiber art pieces. She uses her trademark layering techniques to create new depths of dimensionality in her work with fabric. Friedman explains, “Textile art has been around for thousands of years, but it is constantly evolving. My focus on fiber has been a recent development in my career as a mixed media artist. It is a very exciting new path for me, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.”

Kissinger focuses on jewelry-making, but carries it to a new level by incorporating pieces cut from gift cards in her pieces. She also uses coiled wire, adapted from a basketry technique, in her jewelry designs. Kissinger has extended herself further by including gift card shapes in mixed media paintings. “My artistic mission is to evoke a sense of pleasure in the viewer that happens in my own mind when I look at beautiful objects,” says Kissinger.

The artwork of both these artists is characterized by strong use of color and texture to create bold and dramatic pieces. Friedman and Kissinger have each put their own stamp on traditional techniques to create beautiful contemporary art.

“Not Your Grandmother’s Art Show” opens Friday, July 5, and is on display through Sunday, July 27.
