Hooked on Fishing

8 a.m., Saturday July 13

Anglers ages 5 to 15 looking to reel in some fun this summer can register for one of nine FREE“Hooked on Fishing” youth fishing classes offered through the Oklahoma City Parks & Recreation Department.

The program will kick off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 8 at the newly-opened South Lakes fishing pond (west) located in South Lakes Park, SW 119 and Meridian. This is the first time anglers will have the opportunity to fish in the park.

The 2013 summer schedule is as follows:

June 8                   South Lakes Park (west pond), SW 119 and Meridian
June 15                 Metro Tech Springlake, NE 36 at Springlake Drive

June 22                 Edwards Park Lake, 1515 North Bryant

July 6                   Edwards Park Lake, 1515 North Bryant
July 13                 Metro Tech Springlake, NE 36 at Springlake Drive
July 20                 Crystal Lake, SW 15th and MacArthur

August 3              Edwards Park Lake, 1515 North Bryant
August 10            South Lakes Park (west pond), SW 119 and Meridian
August 18            Dolese Youth Park, NW 50th and Meridian

“Hooked on Fishing” participants learn knot tying and casting, fish identification, angler etiquette, plus local fishing regulations. The classes are taught by the City’s fisheries biologist and volunteer instructors from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.

“Our free summer clinics offer an easy way to introduce young people to the sport of fishing,” said Bob Martin, fisheries biologist for the City of Oklahoma City.  “It also provides a way for families to spend meaningful time together while enjoying the many fishing opportunities we have in the city.”

Fishing poles, tackle and bait are provided at each class. Per City ordinance, adults accompanying youth participants are not required to carry a State fishing license or City permit during class time. During non-class times, all anglers between the ages of 16 and 62 who are not exempt for disability purposes must possess both a State fishing license and City fishing permit to fish on city waters. Permits cost $3.50 for a 24-hour permit, or $18.50 for an annual permit.

The summer youth classes are by reservation only, and children must be accompanied by an adult.  Attendees are encouraged to show up 15 minutes prior to the class start time.

The free fishing clinics are a partnership between the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department, the Oklahoma City Police Department Athletic League and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
