Urinetown

None
2 p.m., Sunday August 04

The Sooner Theatre will present Urinetown The Musical, the last of two summer productions starring students in the theatre’s summer production camps, August 1-4, 2013.

The cast of 40 includes 12-18 yr. old students, all of which auditioned for and were selected to perform in the camp. There are six performances of Urinetown, August 1-4, and the kids will rehearse in camp four hours per day each weekday to put up the show in just three and a half short weeks. Cast members are primarily from the south metro, including Oklahoma City, Moore and Norman.

“Music theatre enthusiasts love this show because there are so many irreverent references to other shows and to the genre as a whole woven into the storyline and musical numbers,” said Brandon Adams, Sooner Theatre associate artistic director and the show’s director. “And the contemporary humor, which reads much more like a Saturday Night Live sketch than classic musical theatre comedy, appeals to the cast and is perfect for those who aren’t sure they would enjoy musical theatre.”

Show times and dates are:
Thursday, August 1, 7:30 p.m.

Friday & Saturday, August 2 & 3, 2 and 7:30 p.m.

Sunday, August 4, 2 p.m.

Some principle roles are double cast.

“We are so proud of the work these kids do, and they work with professional technical staff, incredible director, music director and choreographer,” said Jennifer Baker, Sooner Theatre executive director. “They work on this show just as professional actors would, with costumers, lighting and sound engineers, full sets – it is a very high quality product at the end of the day.”

Directed by Brandon Adams, Music Direction by Melissa Griffith and choreographed by Lisa Fox, URINETOWN™  is one of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years. A hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold, the title of the show becomes one of the many jokes in the production. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom. Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, URINETOWN catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

Tickets are $10 per person and will go on sale to the public beginning Saturday, July 13. Group rates are available for 10 or more tickets to any one performance. Tickets can be purchased online at www.soonertheatre.com any time day or night, or by phone at (405) 321-9600 or at the Sooner Theatre box office, Tuesday – Friday, 10 a.m. – noon and 2-5 p.m.
