iCan Bike

None
Wednesday August 07

Remember your first bike all shiny and new? The tires emitted the smell of rubber that filled the garage for months. Some kids learn to ride at the ripe age of five and take the training wheels off the second week. However, for individuals with disabilities, this is not the case. However, this summer many children, teens and adults who live with disabilities are learning to ride a bike for the first time thanks to iCan Bike.

iCan Bike at OCCC

iCan Bike, a bike camp especially for individuals with disabilities, will be on the Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) campus August 5-9, using a fleet of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program, and a trained staff to teach disabled individualshow to ride. Cost for the five day camp is $150.

iCan Bike at OCCC will last an hour and 15 minutes each day, and will to teach boys and girls, women and men how to ride a bicycle and to be a lifelong independent rider. Over the course of the camp, each rider’s bike will be adjusted gradually to introduce levels of instability in order to challenge the rider at their own individual pace. Each rider will also be assigned a volunteer “spotter” to assist them each day.

Who Can Participate

Children eight years of age and up, teens and adults who have a diagnosed disability but are still able to walk without assistive devices can participate in iCan Bike.

iCan Bike and iCan Shine

iCan Bike is a part of iCan Shine, an organization providing quality learning opportunities in recreational activities for individuals with disabilities.

In 2012, iCan Shine collaborated with organizations and individuals to conduct over 90 iCan Bike programs in 32 States and 2 Provinces in Canada, serving nearly 2,500 individuals with disabilities.  Approximately 80% of the individuals who participate in iCan Bike programs ride a two-wheel bicycle independently by the end of our five-day programs.

iCan Bike Volunteer/Sponsor

iCan Bike volunteers, sponsors and donations are still needed for the event at OCCC. Be a volunteer “spotter,” and walk, jog or run alongside the same rider each day and experience the reward that comes with helping an individual learn to ride a bike. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old unless accompanied by an adult. Required volunteer orientation/training will be held on Sunday, Aug. 4 at OCCC from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

For those who can’t donate their time, iCan Bike is also accepting monetary donations. No donation is too small. Sponsor a rider or an entire session by making a donation to the organization.

For more information, to participate in iCan Bike at OCCC as a rider or volunteer, or to make a donation, contact the OCCC office of Recreation and Fitness at (405) 682-7860, or contact Nikki Williams at iCan Bike at nikki1055@gmail.com or (316) 650-4655.
