8 p.m., Saturday September 28
Carpenter Square Theatre opens its 30th Anniversary Season with “Unnecessary Farce” by Paul Slade Smith which plays September 6-28 at 800 W. Main in downtown Oklahoma City.
Two cops, three crooks, and eight doors add up to dozens of mix-ups in the fast-paced comedy set in two adjoining motel rooms.  At the play’s start, two rookie police officers are set to run an undercover sting on the mayor who is suspected of embezzling several million dollars from the city’s coffers.  They’ve enlisted the help of a local accountant who has reviewed the books and scheduled a meeting with the mayor.   Little does the mayor know that the police will be taping the encounter and are right next door watching on a video monitor.  Almost immediately the sting operation begins to unravel, and the accountant and inexperienced police officers discover more criminals operating in their small city.  Add some romance, dropped trousers, and bagpipers into the mix, and the hilarious action moves into overdrive until the rollicking conclusion.
The cast includes David Burkhart and Jessica Bisel as the rookie officers, Rachel Messer as the accountant Karen Brown, Curt Rose as head of Town Hall security, Michael Hardwick as a Scottish rogue, with John Q. Wilson and Vicki Wilcox as Mayor Meekly and his wife Mary. Rhonda Clark directs the ensemble cast and serves as costume designer.  Bob Cross is rehearsal stage manager, while Shannon Smith is production stage manager.  James Polk Wilson is in charge of the set and lighting.
