Let's Talk About It: "Making Sense of the Civil War\"

None
7 p.m., Tuesday November 05

The series theme is titled “Making Sense of the American Civil War” in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the war and the Emancipation. The discussion series is made possible through a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council with funding from the National Endowment of the Humanities as part of its We the People initiative promoting scholarship, teaching and learning about American history and culture.

The first discussion session, titled Imagining War will cover March and selections from Louisa May Alcott’s Journal kept at the Hospital, Georgetown, D.C.” that was included in the America’s War anthology.

March is a novel about a man who leaves his family behind to help the Union army.

At each session in the series, a humanities scholar makes a presentation on the book in the context of the theme. Small group discussions follow with experienced discussion leaders. At the end, all participants come together for a brief wrap-up.

Those who are interested in participating are encouraged to preregister and borrow the reading selections and theme brochure by calling Harbour Winn, director of the Center for Interpersonal Study through Film and Literature, at (405) 208-5472, e-mailing him at hwinn@okcu.edu or dropping by the Dulaney-Browne Library room 211 or 207.

Other dates, themes and books included in the series are:

* Sept. 24, Choosing Sides with selections from America’s War

* Oct. 8, Making Sense of War with selections from America’s War

* Oct. 22, The Shape of War with Crossroad of Freedom by James McPherson

* Nov. 5 War and Freedom with selections from America’s War
