Visually Speaking: A Mother-Daugher Conversation

12-5 p.m., Saturday September 14
The mother-daughter pair spent the last several months collaborating on this series in what has become a familiar pattern to them: exchanging ideas, sharing concepts and feelings, borrowing techniques, and ultimately influencing and inspiring the other.
The two artists painted on smooth hardboard or wood panels. Colorful rectangular shapes suggestive of windows form patterns throughout the work of both. Sometimes they introduce a female figure: Elise's are rendered with individual definition, while Janice's remain stylized and symbolic. And while layers of brushstrokes are evident throughout Elise's paintings, Janice's are composed with splatters, shapes and charcoal lines. Yet both artists employ vivid, complementary colors to create visual excitement. Elise frequently uses the panel's smooth surface to reveal her brushstrokes; at other times, she builds up dramatic textures. In one such piece, Elise adhered scraps of a discarded shirt to the panel, an idea Janice then incorporated into some of her strongly textured pieces.
