He began the installation by creating more than 50 cubist and rodeo inspired drawings and paintings. Meanwhile, White and a crew of artists and craftspeople helped to assemble the interactive sculptures out of wood, cardboard, glue, Styrofoam, mechanical parts, and paint. Visitors will be able to activate each of the three puppet figures -a rodeo bull rider, bronc rider and calf roper -by pulling on the ropes.
"Wayne White is on a mission to make art that is at once humorous and accessible. In his installation, HALO AMOK, Wayne merges the familiar sport of rodeo with the art historical style of cubism to create a movable sculpture that will delight people of all ages. This is one exhibition where you can touch the artwork." said exhibition curator Brian Hearn.
His remarkably diverse career includes working as a cartoonist, illustrator, animator, puppet designer, production designer for film and television, performer, and visual artist. Previously known for his puppet characters on "Pee-wee's Playhouse"or groundbreaking animated music videos like Peter Gabriel's "Big Time," Wayne has quietly evolved from commercial artist to acclaimed fine artist over the last two decades.
White will be giving a gallery talk at 7 p.m. on June 6, the day the exhibition opens. During the final weekend of HALO AMOK, Wayne has selected two classic films that will screen in the Noble Theater Aug. 30 and 31. "Sullivan's Travels" is a screwball comedy about a spoiled Hollywood director who goes undercover as a tramp to see how the other half lives, and "A Face in the Crowd" starring Andy Griffith as Arkansas hobo, Lonesome Rhodes, who becomes an overnight media star.
The exhibition closes September 1.
