Alan Levenson, a Jewish intellectual history professor at the University of Oklahoma, will deliver the lectures under a theme titled Joseph in Scripture and Tradition: Writing Biblical Biography. The lectures are free to the public and will be held in OCU’s Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel on N.W. 23rd Street between Blackwelder and Kentucky avenues.

The first lecture, “Joseph in Biblical Context,” will be at 1 p.m.; “Joseph and His Brothers: Thomas Mann’s Bible” will be at 3 p.m.; and “Joseph’s Women” will be at 7 p.m.

 

Levenson has written extensively on the Jewish experience for scholarly and popular audiences. He is the author of three books and many articles and is considered a leading authority on the modern Jewish experience.

 Levenson joined the faculty at OU in 2008. Previously he taught history, thought and Bible at Siegal College in Cleveland for 18 years. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brown University and his doctorate from Ohio State University.

The Neustadt Lecture series was started in 1983 by Walter Neustadt to explore the contributions of Judaic religious traditions on Western civilization and thought.
