The University of Oklahoma School of Music presents the OU Symphony Orchestra in a Sutton Concert Series performance entitled “Symphonic Dances” on Tuesday, March 11 at 8 p.m., in the Sharp Concert Hall of the Catlett Music Center, 500 W. Boyd Street Norman. The orchestra, conducted by its Music Director, Jonathan Shames, will perform Bizet’s Symphony in C and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances.
"Bizet's Symphony is a miracle, a work of freshness and originality from an astonishing 17-year-old composer," said Dr. Shames. "Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, on the other hand, is the last work he wrote, and packs a lifetime of experience- memories of the old pre-Soviet Revolution Russia in which the composer grew up, more modern harmonies and rhythms of the West he emigrated to, all blended with Rachmaninoff's signature brooding and lush melody. It's a bold and tremendously exciting work, and we're proud our students are tackling it with such success."
Ticket prices are $9 adult, $5 student, OU faculty/staff and senior adult. Tickets are available at the OU Fine Arts Box Office (405) 325-4101, 500 W. Boyd Street, Catlett Music Center, OU campus in Norman.
