A Piece of my Heart
2 p.m., Sunday April 06
Recently named, “The most enduring play on Vietnam in the nation,” by The Vietnam Vets Association, “A Piece of my Heart” by Shirley Lauro, will transport the audience back to a time when young men and women did not always willingly go fight in a war that was most certainly not supported by the average citizen, nor was their service appreciated. It was a time when an 18thbirthday for a young man was not a celebratory rite of passage, but a fearful time of wondering if they would be called up as they registered for the draft.
In the 1960’s and early 1970’s, while this “police action” raged, the military was still pretty much a boy’s club. Women never saw “line of fire” duty alongside their fellow soldiers. A young woman’s role in this war was that of a nurse. “A Piece of my Heart” is a powerful, true drama that depicts the paths of six women who went to Vietnam: five nurses and a USO singer. The play portrays each young woman before, during, and after her tour in the war-torn jungle and ends as each leaves a personal token at The Wall in Washington.
“A Piece of my Heart” premiered in New York City at Manhattan Theatre Club to rave reviews. The New York Times stated, “There have been a number of plays dealing with Vietnam, but none with the direct, emotional impact of Ms. Lauro’s work.” And now The Stage Door is proud to be featuring this powerful piece in its 2013-2014 Season.
“A Piece of my Heart” is being directed by Denise Harris, a very familiar face around The Stage Door for the last 17 years. Denise is kind of a “Jane of all trades” around the theatre, having directed nine shows and worn the hats of costumer, set designer, light and sound technician, stage manager and backstage crew member, academy teacher, producer, board member, janitor, and general all around flunky. Plus, she even found some time through all of that to be
cast in many shows. A show about veterans is certainly in the capable hands of a Stage Door veteran.
