Fifth Annual Extreme Racing
Remington Park officials today announced Extreme Racing with zebras, camels and ostriches will be back to the track later in April for an afternoon of excitement and hilarity for the entire family. As part of live American Quarter Horse and Mixed-Breed racing, Extreme Racing at Remington Park takes place Sunday, April 27. Racing begins at 1:30 p.m., with camels, ostriches and zebras competing for the Winner’s Circle, in one race each, throughout the afternoon.
In 2013, Extreme Racing attracted over 26,000 people, the highest attendance garnered in the short four-year history of the event. Dale Day, track announcer, said there are additional extreme activities being added to Sundays in April, all of which will culminate with Extreme Racing Day on the final Sunday.
“To mark our fifth year of Extreme Racing, we want patrons to have a unique, enjoyable and unforgettable experience,” said Day. “That is accomplished through a day like Extreme Racing. Patrons can see, touch and smell animals not typically found in our state, all the while they get to share a special afternoon with their family and friends. Not to mention watching the jockeys racing aboard these extreme animals.”
In addition to the exotic animals, the day also will feature a 21-inch miniature horse as well as multiple pig races on the Plaza. Extreme Racing will be the conclusion to Extreme Sundays hosted by Remington Park throughout the month of April.
Extreme Sunday Schedule - Live racing starts at 1:30 p.m. each Sunday
Sunday, April 6—The day will be filled with live Quarter Horse Racing and the National Reining Horse Association making a debut. You’ll see American Quarter Horses providing an exhibition with their athletic turns, tops and spins.
Sunday, April 13—Miniature donkeys will invade Remington Park for an up close meet and greet with the fans. Expect to see several different types of miniature donkeys and prepare to learn a little about their personalities and differences from some local area farmers that raise and show these gentle creatures. Members of the Lil’ Ass Carriage Society will also compete with their donkeys in a Costumed Chariot Race down the racing surface between races five and six, approximately 3:25 p.m. One lucky winner also will be completely prepared for the upcoming extreme weather season as he or she wins a new tornado shelter as part of this Extreme Sunday. (See complete rules for details.)
Sunday, April 20 – Easter Sunday – American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed racing.
Sunday, April 27—Extreme Racing including zebras, ostriches and camels. The Extreme races will take place at approximately 2:00, 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. For more hilarity, people dressed in ostrich costumes will race on the track. There will be five food trucks on-deck to make this day deliciously extreme with Smokin’ Okies, Off the Hook, Roxy’s Ice Cream Social, Mexi Dog and Wild Al’s all in attendance.
Sponsored by the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association, this year’s event also includes a community-involvement portion. Each exotic animal-professional jockey combination will be paired with a celebrity disc jockey trainer and an Oklahoma-based nonprofit organization. The winning animal’s nonprofit organization will receive a $1,000 donation from Remington Park in the camel, ostrich and zebra races. The benefiting organizations include American Heart Association, Easter Seals Oklahoma, Family Awareness and Community Teamwork (FACT), Freedom School, New View Oklahoma, OKC Museum of Art, Oklahoma City Chapter for Juvenile Diabetes, Oklahoma Special Olympics, Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, Rein In Cancer, Royal Family Kids, Sky’s the Limit Ranch and The Bella Foundation.
The 1/16-mile camel race will feature four camels with speeds comparable to that of a horse. The five ostriches will race approximately 100 yards, while the zebras will race 1/16 of a mile. There is no fee to attend the races. For more information, visit www.RemingtonPark.com or call (405) 424-1000.
