Riled Up and Wasted on Light
The University of Central Oklahoma’s creative writing club, Literature in Performance (L.I.P.), and Red Dirt Home for Wayward Poets will host Buddy Wakefield, three-time world champion poet, for a performance 8 p.m. April 19 at The Paramount, 701 W. Sheridan Ave. in Oklahoma City’s Film Row district.
Wakefield, 39, is an American slam poet from Shreveport, La. He has been published by Righteous Babe Records and Write Bloody Publishing, and has been featured on NPR, BBC and HBO’s Def Poetry Jam. In 2004, he won both the Individual World Poetry Slam and the title at the International Poetry Festival, and defended his Individual World Poetry Slam title in 2005.
Oklahoma City is one of Wakefield’s stops on his 2014-2015 World Tour, “Riled Up and Wasted on Light.”
In a 2014 interview with Book Talk Magazine, Wakefield called poetry slam “an effective gimmick to get folks excited about poetry.”
“It’s the competitive art of spoken word,” Wakefield explained. “It’s a competition, judged and so on. It’s accessible to everyone, and a great starting point for many."
L.I.P. promotes presentation and discussion of all forms of literature, including poetry, film and music. The group hosts a different event every Monday night in Pegasus Theater on Central’s Edmond campus, including scriptwriting workshops and guest speakers.
The event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.
