A Walk Through the Soul

Tuesday May 06

Karam Cheong, known by the name Karam, is an international artist from Seoul, Korea whose impressionist oil paintings are derived from her emotions, "Whenever I feel something, I paint it or create it" she says; suggesting that the mood of the artists' works is driven not by physical content, but rather something ethereal.  Karam obtained a BFA in Communication Design from the Parsons School of Design in New York.  Only a few years after receiving her degree Karam left a very successful career in graphic design to pursue her passion for fine art.  Karam's creative method is directed towards process and surface balanced by an adept understanding of color theory. Through her thick paint application her works push the boundaries of impressionism to an almost abstract expressionist visual while still maintaining representational imagery in a highly tactile impasto style.  Karam states that her work is "an unconscious process where I trust my intuition".  Her preference is to start a piece without a preconceived notion of the outcome allowing exploration and discovery inside each composition; the alla prima style. Karam states "I don't always know what I am looking for, but I know it is always there."  The artist's compositions focus on landscape and most often depicted in strong tonal ranges of a limited color palette.

Karam will debut a large selection of new paintings for the exhibit titled "A Walk Through the Soul" at Paseo Originals Art Gallery.  The feature exhibit will run from the 29th of April through June 15th 2014. The gallery will host an opening reception during the First Friday art walk on Paseo on May 2nd from 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm.  The reception and all associated gallery events are free and open to the public. Focusing on contemporary fine art, the gallery represents established, mid-career and emerging artists of exceptional caliber. With one of the largest spaces in the Paseo District, the gallery hosts monthly exhibits defined in two gallery exhibit spaces featuring both national and international artists who exemplify the unique characteristics of a collectable fine artist. Showcasing ingenuitive and technically evolved artworks, Paseo Originals is dedicated to beginning and established collectors. The gallery hosts opening receptions for exhibits on the first Friday of each month during the Paseo First Friday Art Walk. The gallery also features lectures and demonstrations. The Paseo Originals is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 11am - 6pm, Saturday from 11am - 5pm and Sunday from 1pm - 5pm.
