2:30 p.m., Sunday July 13
Carpenter Square Theatre will hold auditions for the first show of its 31st Season, the award-winning comedy-drama “Detroit” by Lisa D’Amour. Readings from the script will be held on Saturday, July 12 beginning at 2:30 p.m. at 806 W. Main in the rehearsal studio located next door to the theater. Additional readings will begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 13.
Director Rhonda Clark seeks two women aged late 20s-40s and three men aged 30s-70. Those auditioning should bring a recent photo and resume. Performances will be September 5-27 with rehearsals beginning August 4.
“Detroit” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and won the Obie Award for Best New American Play for 2013. The tense, funny new play is set in a first-ring suburb just outside a city that might be Detroit. Ben and Mary see sudden signs of life at the deserted house next door. When they invite their new neighbors over for a barbecue, they find their life changing in wildly unexpected ways. The quintessential American backyard party turns quickly into something more dangerous—and filled with potential. "Detroit" is a fresh, offbeat look at what happens when we dare to open up to something new.
