The University of Oklahoma School of Music presents Music of J. S. Bach, as part of the Sutton Concert Series at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, in the Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall of the Catlett Music Center. “We always love to perform the great music of J. S. Bach.” says Eugene Enrico, Reaugh Professor of Musicology with the OU School of Music, “In this concert we present three of Bach’s most interesting works.” The concert will open with the Violin Concerto in E Major led by solo violinist Dr. Gregory Lee, Co-Artistic Director of the Accademia Filarmonica Concert Series. According to Enrico, “The concert continues with the Sixth Brandenburg Concerto, which is quite unusual because the orchestra omits the violins, and instead uses only violas, cellos and bass. Soloists for the concerto are Dr. Mark Neumann, Professor of Viola at OU, and Betty Shaohong, OU doctoral student in viola performance. Although the concerto was originally written for two viola da gambas, Neumann and Shaohong will perform on modern violas.” The finale of the concert will present Bach’s Cantata #150,“Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, featuring the OU Chorale conducted by Dr. Richard Zielinski, OU Director of Choral Activities and Co-Artistic Director of the Accademia Filarmonica. Soprano soloist for the cantata is Donna Cox, OU Professor of Voice. According to Zielinski, “This cantata is unusual in Bach’s repertoire because the orchestra uses only violins and basso continuo with the surprising feature of a solo bassoon.”
