How do we protect our identities while participating in Internet commerce? What is the relationship between Internet freedom and the growth of democracy? These are questions that will be discussed in a two-day Future of Privacy Symposium hosted by the University of Oklahoma Feb. 25-26.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;">“The Future of Privacy in a Socially Networked World” will feature a keynote by journalist and social commentator Evgeny Morozov, author of&nbsp;The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom,&nbsp;on Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. Morozov argues that the Internet is not necessarily the key to democracy but may be just the opposite if used for authoritarian purposes.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;">Another session Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. will feature a discussion with Ashley Packard, digital media and law professor from the University of Houston – Clear Lake, and Chris Soghoian, principal technologist for the American Civil Liberties Union, on “Strategies for Effective Privacy and Civil Liberties Activism.”</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;">The closing session at 1:30 p.m. will be a panel discussion between Morozov, Packard and Soghoian and will be moderated by University of Oklahoma law professor Stephen Henderson. The topic will be “What the Courts Can – and Should – Do to Preserve Constitutional Privacy Protections.”</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;">All events will be held in the Ethics &amp; Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium in Gaylord Hall, room 1140, on the Norman campus. In addition, all sessions will be streamed live on the Gaylord College website at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ou.edu/gaylordlive" target="_blank"></a><a href="http://www.ou.edu/gaylordlive" target="_blank">http://www.ou.edu/<wbr>gaylordlive</a>.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;">The Future of Privacy Symposium is a Centennial Celebration of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication in conjunction with the Institute for the American Constitutional Heritage. Senior Vice Provost Kyle Harper and Edith Kinney Gaylord Presidential Professor Robert Kerr organized the symposium.
