Girl power

It’s ladies’ night. And the feeling’s right!

Do you love hiking and biking and generally being awesome? Are you also a lady? Good for you! Backwoods is hosting a ladies’ night, well, tonight.

From 6-8 p.m. at the Backwoods on May Avenue, adventuresome ladies can check out all the great gear, clothing, accessories and shoes (!!! but they’re hiking shoes, so maybe only !!) in this really cool outdoor store.

Attending girls will get discounts, vie for giveaways, plus indulge in chocolate, wine, appetizers and free chair massages.

By Crom, it's crazy!

‘Conan’ cartoons coming to DVD

Those of you awaiting the “Conan the Barbarian” 3-D remake hitting theaters on Aug. 19, satisfy your hunger for swords and sorcery until then with Shout! Factory’s DVD release of “Conan the Adventurer: Season One,” streeting July 26.

It’s two discs of the 1982 cartoon series. I wasn’t even aware there was a cartoon series. We’ll have a review soon. In the meantime, feast on these three clips. —Rod Lott

Dark Tide

Just when you thought it was safe to watch a Halle Berry movie.

Thriller

Rod Lott
I'm glad that Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez found love on the set, because that makes Dark Tide not a total loss. Otherwise, this big-budget, theater-skipping adventure is perhaps the most toothless shark movie ever made, and remember, I've sat through Dinoshark and Sharktopus.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island / Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island

One good Verne deserves another.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
You won't find Jules Verne's name in the credits of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, but so integral is he to the surprise-hit sequel that the classic author is practically a supporting character, despite being dead since 1905.

The Hunter

Catch a tiger by his Dafoe.

Drama

Rod Lott
Forgive the bland title; The Hunter stands tall as a terrific thriller from Down Under, arguably three-fourths excellent.

Hercules, Samson and Ulysses / The Slave / Sandokan the Great

Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?

Action

Rod Lott
Swords and sandals: Once a matinee mainstay, the adventure subgenre is now all but extinct, kept alive by the occasional Conan movie or Titans clash. DVD helps, too, such as three new offerings from Warner Archive.

Bigfoot

Toes the line of Syfy stupidity.

Sci-Fi

Rod Lott
At least Bigfoot does not waste viewers’ time in showing them Bigfoot. They have to wait one minute, tops, so if that’s all you ask of this Asylum release that premiered recently on Syfy, you’re golden.

The Thief of Bagdad

Still magical, nearly 90 years later.

Action

Rod Lott
With the Cohen Film Collection, we may have another Criterion Collection-level provider of classic movies in the making, if its Blu-ray presentation of The Thief of Bagdad is any indication.

Terror on a Train

Choo-choo-choose something else.

Thriller

Rod Lott
Not to be confused with the ’80s slasher Terror Train — but, oh, how I wish it were! — 1952's Terror on a Train finds Glenn Ford (Superman: The Movie's Pa Kent) as Peter Lyncort, a bomb diffuser whose home life with his spouse (French actress Anne Vernon) is currently as explosive as his work life.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec

‘Extraordinary,’ indeed!

Action

Rod Lott
How ironic that un film par Luc Besson — the Frenchman behind such action smashes as the Taken and The Transporter series, among others — would fail to play American theaters, yet that’s what happened with The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec. The 2010 adventure finally sees the light of day on these shores from Shout! Factory; its absence from our multiplexes is not indicative of its quality.
