42nd Street Forever: Blu-ray Edition

A treasure trove of trailers that titillate.

Action

Rod Lott
Since 2005, Synapse Films has helped keep the sticky-floored spirit of grindhouse cinema alive by issuing collections of coming attractions under the 42nd Street Forever banner. Interested parties can catch up on the half-dozen titles thus far on DVD (I have, minus the lone XXX-Treme one) or opt for the new Blu-ray Edition. It's essentially a "greatest hits" piece, culling 80 trailers from all previous volumes.

Total Recall: Mind-Bending Edition

Consider that an uprgrade.

Sci-Fi

"Let's do it," says Arnold in the opening minutes of Total Recall. "Let's go to Mars."

Gone in 60 Seconds: Car Crash King Edition

For pure automobile action, it’s ‘Gone,’ baby, ‘Gone.’

Action

Rod Lott
Compared to its 2000 big-budget remake, H.B. Halicki's Gone in 60 Seconds is deficient in slickness, star power, performances, plotting and humor. Yet the 1974 indie original decimates the Hollywood version as an all-around entertainment. Why? Two simple reasons, boiled down to numbers: some 500 vehicles wrecked and a 40-minute chase scene.

The Flaming Lips — Playing Hide and Seek with the Ghosts of Dawn

Rock

Louis Fowler
The Flaming Lips’ latest cover album, Playing Hide and Seek with the Ghosts of Dawn, is a song-by-song remake of King Crimson’s 1969 classic, In the Court of the Crimson King. Naturally, it’s only available on hard-to-get, limited-edition colored vinyl.

Captain America: Collector’s Edition

He was the big screen’s real ‘First Avenger.’

Action

Rod Lott
Not long after Batman changed Hollywood in the summer of 1989, every studio wanted to have the next comics-based blockbuster. I remember visiting Penn Square Mall’s multiplex (as I did often back then) and seeing a poster for Captain America. The one-sheet was comprised of little more than a close-up of Cap’s iconic shield and a promise to arrive next summer.

National Lampoon's Vacation: 30th Anniversary Edition

A comedy classic turns 30; moose outside shoulda told ya.

Comedy

Rod Lott
I found out long ago it's a long way down the Holiday Road — three decades, to be precise. I forever hold an extra-special affinity for 1983's National Lampoon's Vacation, not just because it's a modern comedy classic, but because it was the first R-rated movie I got to see in theaters; I was 12. (Thank you, Janice Haunschild, for convincing my mom she had nothing to worry about.)

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

... and they kicked ass happily ever after.

Action

Rod Lott
A few surprising things about Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters:
• It comes from MTV Films,
• is produced by Will Ferrell,
• and is as fun as its title is dumb.

Enter the Dragon: 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition

Enter the greatest martial-arts film in history.

Action

Rod Lott
To karate-chop right to the chase, Enter the Dragon is the martial-arts movie to end all martial-arts movies. This comes as news to no one who has seen and enjoyed it over what now amounts to four decades. To celebrate that milestone, Warner Home Video has reissued it on Blu-ray in a handsome 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition.

Street Trash

Now every day can be garbage day.

Comedy

Rod Lott
Street Trash is a semipolitical horror comedy that pulls out all the stops in an all-out effort seemingly to offend as many viewers as possible. Personally, I think that’s a good thing.
