Topic: Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma

On your honor

I was always jealous of my friends in Girl Scouts. They went camping and visited Niagara Falls and had a direct line to Tagalongs.

While I never was a Girl Scout, I was in Brownies for two years. It was not what you’d call a pleasant experience. Such highlights included doing jumping jacks outside while our troop leader watched from a window (the Exercise Badge) and this strange experiment where we brought in different chips and poured them out on paper towels to see how oily they were and which resulted in said troop leader snacking a lot (the Feed Tammy Badge?).

But Troop Leader Tammy aside, Girl Scouts is a great experience for kids. And it can be an equally great experience for volunteers who are looking for more than just snacking opportunities. Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma is hosting a training event in the metro to get adults really to volunteer with Girl Scouts. This isn’t just for troop leaders, but any adult who wants to get involved and be a mentor to local girls.

Girl Scouts in the metro has been growing, so volunteers are needed. Volunteers join Girl Scouts (just $12 a year) and then participate in the training class scheduled for Jan. 29. The class is $3, and the deadline to register is Jan. 19. For more info or to register online, check out the Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma website.
